Active sessions later display and privacy settings
Active sessions later display and privacy settings
The Active Sessions window on the right of every page can be a little distracting when someone is constantly refreshing their tags. To prevent many people that are not committed to their tags from showing up, I think it would be better if you only start displaying them when they are a few minutes in. I'd say somewhere between 2 and 5 minutes?

I was also thinking some people might prefer people not knowing they are doing a session, so maybe you could add some privacy settings. I'd say one for not showing sessions by default, and perhaps even one for only hiding the current session.

Thoughts as to the interaction design of this:
To make switching the privacy settings easier you could also place it somewhere accessible. I'm thinking a tiny gear button in the top right corner of the Active Sessions window.
If you want to add the hide current session function the most intuitive place to put it would be at the selection screen before starting a session, but to prevent cluttering it might be better to add an X button to the user's own entry in the active sessions list or something like that. If you're adding the 2-5 minute display delay I suggested it would be better to make an exception for the user's own sessions, so that they can click the X button right after they got the tags, and before anyone else can see it show up.

i would say having it on on default, else no one is gonna put it on i guess
RE: Active sessions later display and privacy settings
Being able to remove your session in the actual Active Sessions list sounds good design-wise. Also because you'd still see your own session when starting, because it would look like it's not working if you'd start a session but don't see yourself in the Active Sessions list.

I'd also like to know if more people want to have their Active Session on private. Just to be sure, we're talking about this:

It really helps making people go back to the site. I'm afraid that implementing the hide functionality will make people do so that otherwise wouldn't really care.

I myself like this idea to see who is painting, brings up the idea of a painting community

I think that not too many people will use it as long as hiding is opt-in. (i.e. it's not hiding by default and you have to perform some sort of action to start hiding)

But to test it out you could also first only implement a hide current session function, and then monitor statistics and/or responses from the users before deciding whether to implement a universal on/off switch.

As for me, I would rarely use the hide function myself. I guess only if I'm not planning to upload anything at the end. I am much more interested in being assured that I'm not spamming people on the site when I'm trying out the tag generator by contantly refreshing a session I don't plan on doing at all. (i.e. the first paragraph of my original post)
RE: Active sessions later display and privacy settings
I know it "seems" trivial to add the private-active-session option, but if in practice no one wants to actually make it private then I'd rather not add the functionality at all. We thought people would want more privacy before and it proved that users really like to share what their doing with everyone.

In that case I am much more interested in being assured that I'm not spamming people on the site when I'm trying out the tag generator by contantly refreshing a session I don't plan on doing at all. - Raizin

If this is your real concern, I think it's better to make your own sessions appear publicly after 5 minutes in the session. We'd need to come up with a design that communicates that your Active Session is recognized but not yet publicly visible.
